What Might This Song Do to the Listener?

An individual who plays Wash on repeat learns to treat a partner's physical presence as a place to dissolve into. The material asks for touch and immersion in one repeated request and credits the partner with seeing the listener accurately, so being surrounded and being known arrive together. Intimacy registers as relief.

Repetition strengthens the reflex to seek a partner's body when the mind is loud. Contact becomes the preferred means of regulation, and the individual reaches for someone earlier in a difficult hour. Calm arrives through the body.

What Might This Song Do to a Society?

A society that takes Wash into common circulation elevates physical closeness to the standing of ordinary care. Communal repetition of a request to be immersed in a partner, alongside praise for being seen accurately, fuses the sensual and the reverent into one register. Touch acquires the standing of devotion.

Couples grow more explicit in asking for contact, and the vocabulary of worship attaches itself to ordinary partnership. Attention concentrates on the felt present, and the practice of describing a bond in terms beyond sensation gets less exercise. Devotion comes to be measured in proximity.

Audience Vibe

The compass reads the lyrics. The Audience Vibe reads the people — the general place the audience thinks the compass should be pointing for this song, not a raw tally of votes. Two needles, one song; the gap between them is the data.

One vote per person per song per year. No single vote can move the needle far — it takes a crowd.

How the Audience Vibe is calculated

The needle is the compass score nudged by the crowd — never a raw tally. Every "push higher," "push lower," and "agree" vote is recombined into one position each time someone votes:

  • Direction comes from the split. Only the gap between higher and lower votes moves the needle. "Agree" votes pull it back toward the compass score.
  • It takes a crowd. Early votes move it gently — a handful shifts it only a point or two. The more lopsided the crowd, the further it goes.
  • It's capped. The audience can pull a song at most 15 points off the compass score, either direction. No pile-on can push it past that.

So a single "push lower" on a song with few votes moves the needle a little (often a point or two), not all the way down — and it can never run away.
