The Rising Compass ("we," "us," "our") operates risingcompass.net. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your choices.
1. Information We Collect
Automatically collected:
- Analytics data. We use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) and PostHog to collect usage data such as pages visited, device type, browser, general geographic region, and interactions with the site. This may include session replays (recordings of your on-page activity, with form fields and sensitive text masked) to help us improve the product. These tools may set cookies on your device. PostHog is served first-party from our own domain. Analytics is anonymous for signed-out visitors; if you sign in to an account, we associate your usage with that account. PostHog stores this data in the United States.
- IP address. Your IP address may be logged when you submit a Misread Report. It is used solely for abuse prevention.
Voluntarily provided:
- Misread Reports. If you submit a Misread Report, we collect your first name, last name, email address, and your message. This information is used to review your submission and send a confirmation receipt.
- Lyrical Charger. If you use the Lyrical Charger feature, we collect the song title and artist you provide. Lyrics are never stored. Only the calibration output — tier, charge value, contamination status, charge summary, and confidence score — is permanently retained in our database. This calibration data becomes part of The Rising Compass lyrical charge database. Your IP address is stored alongside each submission for rate limiting and abuse prevention.
2. Local Storage
The Misread Report form generates a random device identifier stored in your browser's local storage. This is used to prevent abuse and is not linked to your personal identity. You can clear it at any time through your browser settings.

4. Third-Party Services
We do not sell, trade, or share your personal information with any other third parties.
5. Data Retention
- Misread Reports are retained indefinitely for calibration purposes.
- Lyrical Charger calibrations (tier, charge value, summary) are retained indefinitely as part of The Rising Compass lyrical charge database. Lyrics are never stored.
- Analytics data is retained per Google's standard GA4 retention policies and PostHog's data retention settings.
6. Your Choices
- Cookie consent. When you first visit, a cookie bar lets you allow or decline analytics cookies. Visitors in the EU, UK, EEA, and California are opt-in (analytics stay off until you choose "Accept"); elsewhere analytics are on by default and you can decline at any time. You can change your choice whenever you like via the Cookie preferences link (also in the site footer). Essential cookies (sign-in, bot protection, and your saved cookie choice) are always on.
- We honor your browser's Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals: with either enabled, no analytics data is collected, regardless of any saved cookie choice. You can also block Google Analytics with a browser extension such as Google Analytics Opt-out.
- You can clear local storage through your browser settings.
- You are not required to submit any personal information to use the site. The compass readings and historical data are fully accessible without providing any data.
7. California Privacy Rights (CCPA/CPRA)
If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act (as amended by the CPRA) gives you specific rights over your personal information. The categories we may collect are described in Section 1: identifiers (IP address on submissions), internet activity (analytics and interaction data), and any information you voluntarily provide in a Misread Report. We use it only to operate the site, respond to your submissions, and prevent abuse.
- Right to know and access. You can ask what personal information we have collected about you and how we use it.
- Right to delete and correct. You can ask us to delete or correct personal information we hold about you, subject to legal exceptions.
- Right to opt out of sale or sharing. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. There is nothing to opt out of, but we still honor your browser's Global Privacy Control signal as a valid opt-out, and with it enabled no analytics data is collected.
- No retaliation. We will not deny you service or offer you different terms for exercising any of these rights.

8. Children's Privacy
The Rising Compass is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
