What is this song about?

A narrator, high on cough syrup, invites a woman over and describes what he will do to her body: rain cash on it, restrain it, brand it with his name, and film it.

What Might This Song Do to the Listener?

An individual who plays Under the Influence on repeat undergoes a decline in the perception of a sexual partner as a person. The material names a woman by an object pronoun through its entire hook and states restraint, branding and filming as the intended acts, with her one recorded objection answered by an assertion of what she really means. Consent registers as a formality.

The clinical course is one of eroded regard for another's stated position. Ownership becomes the vocabulary in which desire is expressed, and intoxication supplies a standing excuse for what follows. The threshold for recognizing coercion inside a sexual encounter falls.

What Might This Song Do to a Society?

A population that circulates Under the Influence undergoes a normalization of possession expressed as desire. Communal rehearsal of a woman named by an object pronoun, restrained, marked with a man's name and recorded installs control as the ordinary content of a sexual proposition, with her stated objection reinterpreted for her by the man addressing her. Refusal loses its plain meaning.

At the population level women's stated positions hold less weight in sexual negotiation, and intoxication gains standing as an explanation that settles the question. Filming an encounter passes into the ordinary repertoire, and the boundary between seduction and coercion becomes harder to name aloud. Ownership circulates as a register of intimacy.

Audience Vibe

The compass reads the lyrics. The Audience Vibe reads the people — the general place the audience thinks the compass should be pointing for this song, not a raw tally of votes. Two needles, one song; the gap between them is the data.

One vote per person per song per year. No single vote can move the needle far — it takes a crowd.

How the Audience Vibe is calculated

The needle is the compass score nudged by the crowd — never a raw tally. Every "push higher," "push lower," and "agree" vote is recombined into one position each time someone votes:

  • Direction comes from the split. Only the gap between higher and lower votes moves the needle. "Agree" votes pull it back toward the compass score.
  • It takes a crowd. Early votes move it gently — a handful shifts it only a point or two. The more lopsided the crowd, the further it goes.
  • It's capped. The audience can pull a song at most 15 points off the compass score, either direction. No pile-on can push it past that.

So a single "push lower" on a song with few votes moves the needle a little (often a point or two), not all the way down — and it can never run away.
