Treat You Better

Shawn Mendes

What is this song about?

A pitch to a woman in another relationship, resting on the narrator's claim that he would do better than the man she chose and on his reading of her face against her own words.

What Might This Song Do to the Listener?

An individual running Treat You Better on repeat develops a readier confidence in their own judgment about someone else's relationship. The material reads distress in a face that says otherwise and answers with an offer to replace the partner, so the listener comes to treat a private assessment as better evidence than a person's own account. Pursuit acquires the standing of concern.

The clinical course is one of licensed intervention. Continued exposure raises the individual's willingness to press a case with someone already attached, and the language of care becomes available for an approach that serves the approacher. Wanting someone comes to feel like looking out for them.

What Might This Song Do to a Society?

A society that circulates Treat You Better through its common repertoire grows practised at framing pursuit of an attached person as concern for them. Repeated communal performance of its comparison makes an outsider's assessment of a couple a legitimate basis for approach, and a stated preference comes to count for less than what an admirer believes he sees. Persistence acquires the manners of care.

At the population level the pattern manifests as a rise in approaches to people who have said they are unavailable. The claim that someone deserves better circulates as a courtship move, and the threshold for treating a refusal as settled rises. A population learns to hear its own wanting as looking out for someone.

Audience Vibe

The compass reads the lyrics. The Audience Vibe reads the people — the general place the audience thinks the compass should be pointing for this song, not a raw tally of votes. Two needles, one song; the gap between them is the data.

Do you think it should stay where it is, or be pushed further in one direction?

One vote per person per song per year. No single vote can move the needle far — it takes a crowd.

How the Audience Vibe is calculated

The needle is the compass score nudged by the crowd — never a raw tally. Every "push higher," "push lower," and "agree" vote is recombined into one position each time someone votes:

  • Direction comes from the split. Only the gap between higher and lower votes moves the needle. "Agree" votes pull it back toward the compass score.
  • It takes a crowd. Early votes move it gently — a handful shifts it only a point or two. The more lopsided the crowd, the further it goes.
  • It's capped. The audience can pull a song at most 15 points off the compass score, either direction. No pile-on can push it past that.

So a single "push lower" on a song with few votes moves the needle a little (often a point or two), not all the way down — and it can never run away.
