What Might This Song Do to the Listener?

An individual who plays That Way on repeat develops an inflated sense of their own scarcity as a bargaining position. The material frames physical access as a privilege granted to the deserving and appraises a prospective partner as goods to sample, and repetition trains the listener to conduct intimacy as an audition they administer. Desire becomes a matter of terms.

Sustained exposure produces a hardening of transactional expectation. The individual grows quicker to test a partner against a standing list of demands, and warmth arrives contingent on performance. Reciprocity narrows to what has been earned.

What Might This Song Do to a Society?

A society that circulates That Way as common repertoire establishes courtship as an audition with one party seated as judge. Repeated communal performance of a scene in which access is granted by merit and a prospective partner is appraised like stock on a shelf raises the standing of leverage inside early intimacy, and the vocabulary of shopping migrates into how people describe each other. Desirability becomes a scored position.

At the population level, first encounters grow more evaluative and the willingness to meet someone plainly declines. People rehearse the judging seat and become worse at occupying the other one. Courtship acquires the texture of procurement.

Audience Vibe

The compass reads the lyrics. The Audience Vibe reads the people — the general place the audience thinks the compass should be pointing for this song, not a raw tally of votes. Two needles, one song; the gap between them is the data.

Do you think it should stay where it is, or be pushed further in one direction?

One vote per person per song per year. No single vote can move the needle far — it takes a crowd.

How the Audience Vibe is calculated

The needle is the compass score nudged by the crowd — never a raw tally. Every "push higher," "push lower," and "agree" vote is recombined into one position each time someone votes:

  • Direction comes from the split. Only the gap between higher and lower votes moves the needle. "Agree" votes pull it back toward the compass score.
  • It takes a crowd. Early votes move it gently — a handful shifts it only a point or two. The more lopsided the crowd, the further it goes.
  • It's capped. The audience can pull a song at most 15 points off the compass score, either direction. No pile-on can push it past that.

So a single "push lower" on a song with few votes moves the needle a little (often a point or two), not all the way down — and it can never run away.
