Stay

Zedd & Alessia Cara

First surfaced on Billboard Year-End Hot 100

What is this song about?

A plea to someone already heading out the door to linger a little longer, with the narrator admitting she has never been good at letting go and dreads the night alone.

What Might This Song Do to the Listener?

An individual who plays Stay on repeat develops a heightened sensitivity to imminent departure. The material isolates the single moment before someone leaves and stretches it across the whole song, and repetition trains attention onto the seconds remaining in an ending. Presence acquires urgency.

Continued exposure produces a candid relationship with the individual's own reluctance. The listener grows readier to name difficulty with release as a trait belonging to the self, and the wish to delay an ending surfaces as something speakable. Requests replace silence.

What Might This Song Do to a Society?

A society that folds Stay into its common repertoire grants ordinary standing to the request that someone linger. Collective singing of a plea delivered without argument or bargaining licenses the plain statement of need between people, and reluctance to let go circulates as a recognized common trait. Asking becomes permissible.

At the population level, expressions of attachment grow more direct, and partings acquire a small ritual pause. People take longer to conclude goodbyes and speak more openly about wanting company. Emotional candor gains everyday standing.

Audience Vibe

The compass reads the lyrics. The Audience Vibe reads the people — the general place the audience thinks the compass should be pointing for this song, not a raw tally of votes. Two needles, one song; the gap between them is the data.

Do you think it should stay where it is, or be pushed further in one direction?

One vote per person per song per year. No single vote can move the needle far — it takes a crowd.

How the Audience Vibe is calculated

The needle is the compass score nudged by the crowd — never a raw tally. Every "push higher," "push lower," and "agree" vote is recombined into one position each time someone votes:

  • Direction comes from the split. Only the gap between higher and lower votes moves the needle. "Agree" votes pull it back toward the compass score.
  • It takes a crowd. Early votes move it gently — a handful shifts it only a point or two. The more lopsided the crowd, the further it goes.
  • It's capped. The audience can pull a song at most 15 points off the compass score, either direction. No pile-on can push it past that.

So a single "push lower" on a song with few votes moves the needle a little (often a point or two), not all the way down — and it can never run away.
