What Might This Song Do to the Listener?

An individual who plays Squabble Up on repeat comes to hold readiness to fight as a baseline social posture. The invitation to brawl repeats as the refrain, origin is demanded of a stranger before anything else, and money and power are counted in the same breath as the threats. Confrontation becomes the greeting.

Sustained exposure lowers the threshold at which an insult calls for a physical answer. Contempt for outsiders and for a woman's judgment travels alongside it. The individual arrives ready and takes hesitation for weakness.

What Might This Song Do to a Society?

A society that absorbs Squabble Up into common circulation rehearses the challenge as a form of greeting. Repeated performance pairs an invitation to fight with a demand to know where a stranger is from, and standing follows from money, numbers, and willingness. Territory governs the encounter.

At the population level, the threshold for physical escalation falls and neighborhood origin becomes a screening question. Women appear as accessories to be graded. Communities organize around who can be called on for a fight.

Audience Vibe

The compass reads the lyrics. The Audience Vibe reads the people — the general place the audience thinks the compass should be pointing for this song, not a raw tally of votes. Two needles, one song; the gap between them is the data.

Do you think it should stay where it is, or be pushed further in one direction?

One vote per person per song per year. No single vote can move the needle far — it takes a crowd.

How the Audience Vibe is calculated

The needle is the compass score nudged by the crowd — never a raw tally. Every "push higher," "push lower," and "agree" vote is recombined into one position each time someone votes:

  • Direction comes from the split. Only the gap between higher and lower votes moves the needle. "Agree" votes pull it back toward the compass score.
  • It takes a crowd. Early votes move it gently — a handful shifts it only a point or two. The more lopsided the crowd, the further it goes.
  • It's capped. The audience can pull a song at most 15 points off the compass score, either direction. No pile-on can push it past that.

So a single "push lower" on a song with few votes moves the needle a little (often a point or two), not all the way down — and it can never run away.
