The Rising Compass

What is this song about?

Against state violence, ancestral bondage and an order stripping the earth for markets, the chorus redefines real strength as love, trust and forgiveness shared among everyone, consoling whoever feels alone.

What Might This Song Do to the Listener?

An individual who plays Power repeatedly revises what they understand strength to be. The material sets domination and accumulation against a competing account in which fulfilment, forgiveness and trust constitute the real thing, and repetition transfers that definition from argument to assumption. Ambition redirects toward capacities the listener already has.

Sustained exposure reduces isolation. Systemic clarity about violence and extraction develops alongside a stated consolation that others have walked the same road, so alarm arrives with company attached. The individual grows readier to locate agency inside the self and among others at once.

What Might This Song Do to a Society?

A society that takes Power into common circulation revises its public definition of strength. People who sing the chorus together rehearse a distinction between force exercised over others and force expressed as provision, forgiveness and trust, while the verses supply the indictment that makes the distinction urgent, from policing to price inflation to an economy consuming the earth for its markets. Domination loses its claim to the word.

Population-level effects present as a decline in the prestige attached to coercive authority and a rise in the standing of figures who feed, heal and repair. Communities absorb the consolation that others have endured the same conditions, and solidarity becomes easier to assemble. A population begins recognising its own capacity as collective.

Audience Vibe

The compass reads the lyrics. The Audience Vibe reads the people — the general place the audience thinks the compass should be pointing for this song, not a raw tally of votes. Two needles, one song; the gap between them is the data.

One vote per person per song per year. No single vote can move the needle far — it takes a crowd.

How the Audience Vibe is calculated

The needle is the compass score nudged by the crowd — never a raw tally. Every "push higher," "push lower," and "agree" vote is recombined into one position each time someone votes:

  • Direction comes from the split. Only the gap between higher and lower votes moves the needle. "Agree" votes pull it back toward the compass score.
  • It takes a crowd. Early votes move it gently — a handful shifts it only a point or two. The more lopsided the crowd, the further it goes.
  • It's capped. The audience can pull a song at most 15 points off the compass score, either direction. No pile-on can push it past that.

So a single "push lower" on a song with few votes moves the needle a little (often a point or two), not all the way down — and it can never run away.
