What Might This Song Do to the Listener?

An individual who plays Not Like Us on repeat rehearses the destruction of a person's standing as entertainment. Accusations of predation on minors are delivered against identified figures, associates are mocked by sexual detail, and a chanted line sorts a community into insiders and one expelled outsider. Judgment is settled by chorus.

Sustained exposure lowers the threshold for treating grave criminal allegations as material for a singalong. Group belonging is reinforced through the exclusion of a common enemy. The individual grows quicker to convict on rhythm.

What Might This Song Do to a Society?

A society that absorbs Not Like Us into common circulation converts an accusation into a verdict by repetition. Communal performance turns allegations of child predation against identified figures into a crowd chant, and belonging is demonstrated by joining the exclusion. Due process loses its social function.

At the population level, reputational destruction becomes a participatory event and the standard of evidence for grave claims falls. Solidarity organizes around a common target. Communities practice expulsion as recreation.

Audience Vibe

The compass reads the lyrics. The Audience Vibe reads the people — the general place the audience thinks the compass should be pointing for this song, not a raw tally of votes. Two needles, one song; the gap between them is the data.

Do you think it should stay where it is, or be pushed further in one direction?

One vote per person per song per year. No single vote can move the needle far — it takes a crowd.

How the Audience Vibe is calculated

The needle is the compass score nudged by the crowd — never a raw tally. Every "push higher," "push lower," and "agree" vote is recombined into one position each time someone votes:

  • Direction comes from the split. Only the gap between higher and lower votes moves the needle. "Agree" votes pull it back toward the compass score.
  • It takes a crowd. Early votes move it gently — a handful shifts it only a point or two. The more lopsided the crowd, the further it goes.
  • It's capped. The audience can pull a song at most 15 points off the compass score, either direction. No pile-on can push it past that.

So a single "push lower" on a song with few votes moves the needle a little (often a point or two), not all the way down — and it can never run away.
