The Rising Compass

Monkeys

TheFatRat

What is this song about?

A species-level satire using the extended metaphor of monkeys to observe humanity's existential confusion, religious conflicts, environmental destruction, materialism, and performative compassion, shifting pronouns from they to you to we to include the narrator in the critique, and closing with an offer of connection.

What Might This Song Do to the Listener?

Monkeys drags you back into the zoo and locks the exhibit behind you. It takes everything the species is proud of, its science and its gods, and reframes it as apes in clothes fighting over who owns the sky, then swings the accusing finger off "them" and onto you. By the last verse there is no balcony left to watch from.

You leave unable to set yourself above anyone's stupidity, your own sitting right there alongside theirs. Because the song closes on "we," the humbling arrives with company and a strange warmth. You end up laughing at the whole circus, yourself included, and oddly less alone.

What Might This Song Do to a Society?

A society that sings along with Monkeys puts the whole species in front of a mirror and refuses to let anyone look away. Millions chant the same verdict on their own kind, apes who built cathedrals and bombs and still panic at being alone, and nobody gets to pin it on someone else. "We are all the monkeys" becomes common ground.

Honest argument gets easier, because the embarrassing admission, that everyone is a bit ridiculous, is already on the table. People push their institutions toward a higher standard while staying willing to work inside them. Cynicism loses its edge when the mockery includes the one doing the mocking.

Audience Vibe

The compass reads the lyrics. The Audience Vibe reads the people — the general place the audience thinks the compass should be pointing for this song, not a raw tally of votes. Two needles, one song; the gap between them is the data.

One vote per person per song per year. No single vote can move the needle far — it takes a crowd.

How the Audience Vibe is calculated

The needle is the compass score nudged by the crowd — never a raw tally. Every "push higher," "push lower," and "agree" vote is recombined into one position each time someone votes:

  • Direction comes from the split. Only the gap between higher and lower votes moves the needle. "Agree" votes pull it back toward the compass score.
  • It takes a crowd. Early votes move it gently — a handful shifts it only a point or two. The more lopsided the crowd, the further it goes.
  • It's capped. The audience can pull a song at most 15 points off the compass score, either direction. No pile-on can push it past that.

So a single "push lower" on a song with few votes moves the needle a little (often a point or two), not all the way down — and it can never run away.
