The Rising Compass

Me, Myself & I

G-Eazy and Bebe Rexha

First surfaced on Billboard Year-End Hot 100

What is this song about?

Claims total self-sufficiency and rides it into a wants list: cannabis, three Ferraris, a designer closet, a famous model alongside him, money and liquor in quantity, plus dismissals of fake friends and of people who want the money and skip the work.

What Might This Song Do to the Listener?

An individual who plays Me, Myself & I on repeat treats solitude as evidence of strength. The material pairs a refusal of company with an inventory of purchases and a nightly intake the narrator names as his method for handling anger, so independence and acquisition arrive as one posture. Needing someone counts as a defect.

Repeated exposure erodes the willingness to ask for help. Grievance toward people who have not earned their position hardens, and the reflex to buy or to drink occupies the place where support would sit. Isolation acquires the standing of an achievement.

What Might This Song Do to a Society?

A society that circulates Me, Myself & I widely rewards the appearance of needing no one. Communal repetition of a self-sufficiency claim, one furnished with luxury goods and an acknowledged nightly intake, makes independence indistinguishable from consumption. Asking becomes an admission.

At the population level, mutual aid loses standing as an ordinary practice. Suspicion of peers rises, and the effort people would spend on repair goes instead to the display of having arrived alone. Intoxication circulates as an accepted method of managing anger.

Audience Vibe

The compass reads the lyrics. The Audience Vibe reads the people — the general place the audience thinks the compass should be pointing for this song, not a raw tally of votes. Two needles, one song; the gap between them is the data.

Do you think it should stay where it is, or be pushed further in one direction?

One vote per person per song per year. No single vote can move the needle far — it takes a crowd.

How the Audience Vibe is calculated

The needle is the compass score nudged by the crowd — never a raw tally. Every "push higher," "push lower," and "agree" vote is recombined into one position each time someone votes:

  • Direction comes from the split. Only the gap between higher and lower votes moves the needle. "Agree" votes pull it back toward the compass score.
  • It takes a crowd. Early votes move it gently — a handful shifts it only a point or two. The more lopsided the crowd, the further it goes.
  • It's capped. The audience can pull a song at most 15 points off the compass score, either direction. No pile-on can push it past that.

So a single "push lower" on a song with few votes moves the needle a little (often a point or two), not all the way down — and it can never run away.
