There is no account of how he felt, no before-and-after, no self-description at all. A song whose purpose was self-report would have one. What IS developed is the message. It is QUOTED, not summarised, and returned to roughly two dozen times. A full verse is given over entirely to other people: the world's broken-hearted, the condition under which an answer arrives, and the parted who may yet see. The narrator does not appear in it.
