What Might This Song Do to the Listener?

An individual who runs In My Soul on repeat comes to rate experience by how much it consumes. The material frames craving as an inborn condition and ruin as an acceptable price. Moderation loses standing.

Repeated exposure lowers tolerance for ordinary conditions. States that once registered as risk acquire the standing of vitality, and willingness to absorb the resulting damage rises. The individual spends the self more readily.

What Might This Song Do to a Society?

A society that takes In My Soul into common circulation grows practised at treating intensity as evidence of a life worth having. Collective rehearsal of the song's appetite recasts consumption of the self as vigor, and the threshold at which a population calls a pattern harmful rises. Endurance of damage becomes a credential.

At the population level the pattern manifests as tolerance for self-expenditure among its members. Institutions and households absorb the cost of people who court their own depletion, and the vocabulary available for naming a compulsion narrows toward praise. Care offered early in such a course meets refusal.

Audience Vibe

The compass reads the lyrics. The Audience Vibe reads the people — the general place the audience thinks the compass should be pointing for this song, not a raw tally of votes. Two needles, one song; the gap between them is the data.

Do you think it should stay where it is, or be pushed further in one direction?

One vote per person per song per year. No single vote can move the needle far — it takes a crowd.

How the Audience Vibe is calculated

The needle is the compass score nudged by the crowd — never a raw tally. Every "push higher," "push lower," and "agree" vote is recombined into one position each time someone votes:

  • Direction comes from the split. Only the gap between higher and lower votes moves the needle. "Agree" votes pull it back toward the compass score.
  • It takes a crowd. Early votes move it gently — a handful shifts it only a point or two. The more lopsided the crowd, the further it goes.
  • It's capped. The audience can pull a song at most 15 points off the compass score, either direction. No pile-on can push it past that.

So a single "push lower" on a song with few votes moves the needle a little (often a point or two), not all the way down — and it can never run away.
