The Rising Compass

Fuck

Post Malone, Jeremih

First surfaced on New Music Friday - USA

What is this song about?

A demand for sex with conversation refused outright, delivered as undressing instructions and a plain statement that the night ends there

sexinfidelity

What Might This Song Do to the Listener?

An individual who plays F**k on repeat acquires a script in which conversation is an obstacle to be cleared before sex. The material opens by refusing to talk, issues instructions for undressing, and closes on a claim of possession, so with repetition the listener treats a partner's willingness as the only relevant fact about her. Preliminaries become delay.

Sustained exposure narrows the range of things the individual notices about another person. Tolerance for issuing directions during an encounter rises, and interest in what a partner thinks declines. Appetite becomes the whole of attention.

What Might This Song Do to a Society?

A society that takes F**k into common circulation adopts the removal of conversation as a mark of honesty. Communal repetition of a demand stated without preamble establishes bluntness about appetite as candour, and a partner's account of herself becomes optional. Consent contracts to a yes or a no at the door.

At the population level, the proportion of encounters that open with instruction rises. People grow practiced at stating a want and treating the statement as sufficient, and the standing of everything around an encounter declines. Intimacy narrows to the act.

Audience Vibe

The compass reads the lyrics. The Audience Vibe reads the people — the general place the audience thinks the compass should be pointing for this song, not a raw tally of votes. Two needles, one song; the gap between them is the data.

Do you think it should stay where it is, or be pushed further in one direction?

One vote per person per song per year. No single vote can move the needle far — it takes a crowd.

How the Audience Vibe is calculated

The needle is the compass score nudged by the crowd — never a raw tally. Every "push higher," "push lower," and "agree" vote is recombined into one position each time someone votes:

  • Direction comes from the split. Only the gap between higher and lower votes moves the needle. "Agree" votes pull it back toward the compass score.
  • It takes a crowd. Early votes move it gently — a handful shifts it only a point or two. The more lopsided the crowd, the further it goes.
  • It's capped. The audience can pull a song at most 15 points off the compass score, either direction. No pile-on can push it past that.

So a single "push lower" on a song with few votes moves the needle a little (often a point or two), not all the way down — and it can never run away.
