The Rising Compass

Everything Matters (feat. Pomme)

AURORA

What is this song about?

A tender address that seats one person inside the whole pattern of the world, atom and star at once, where that belonging is what makes everything matter.

What Might This Song Do to the Listener?

An individual who plays Everything Matters (feat. Pomme) on repeat develops a durable sense of personal consequence. The material addresses the listener as constitutive of dawn, weather and motion, and repetition converts that address into a settled assumption about their own standing in the world. Significance becomes a property of being present.

Attention to ordinary phenomena widens. The individual grows readier to register small events as consequential, and the reflex to rank experiences by importance loses force. Baseline regard for the self settles at the scale of the surrounding world.

What Might This Song Do to a Society?

A society that takes Everything Matters (feat. Pomme) into common circulation broadens what it counts as consequential. Collective rehearsal of an address that seats the individual inside dawn, weather and motion distributes significance across ordinary life, and the threshold at which an event qualifies as important falls. Attention becomes an ordinary civic habit.

At the population level, tolerance for treating people as incidental declines. Communities grow practised at according standing to members whose contribution is ordinary, and the machinery that sorts lives by visible achievement loses purchase. The aggregate effect is a flattening of the hierarchy by which a population assigns worth.

Audience Vibe

The compass reads the lyrics. The Audience Vibe reads the people — the general place the audience thinks the compass should be pointing for this song, not a raw tally of votes. Two needles, one song; the gap between them is the data.

Do you think it should stay where it is, or be pushed further in one direction?

One vote per person per song per year. No single vote can move the needle far — it takes a crowd.

How the Audience Vibe is calculated

The needle is the compass score nudged by the crowd — never a raw tally. Every "push higher," "push lower," and "agree" vote is recombined into one position each time someone votes:

  • Direction comes from the split. Only the gap between higher and lower votes moves the needle. "Agree" votes pull it back toward the compass score.
  • It takes a crowd. Early votes move it gently — a handful shifts it only a point or two. The more lopsided the crowd, the further it goes.
  • It's capped. The audience can pull a song at most 15 points off the compass score, either direction. No pile-on can push it past that.

So a single "push lower" on a song with few votes moves the needle a little (often a point or two), not all the way down — and it can never run away.
