What Might This Song Do to the Listener?

An individual who plays Dancing with the Enemy on repeat develops a preference for instinct over deliberation when the stakes feel high. The material recasts a rivalry as a game won by trusting the gut, abandoning the rulebook, and treating a formidable opponent as a dance partner. Pressure turns into an invitation to play.

Impulse gains standing over calculation. With repetition the listener grows quicker to move before overthinking, and a setback registers as a cue to rise. Confidence in the moment strengthens.

What Might This Song Do to a Society?

A society that circulates Dancing with the Enemy prizes instinct and improvisation as the fitting response to rivalry. Sung by a group, the song reframes an opponent as a partner in a shared contest and treats the discarding of rules as the route to winning. Spontaneity gains civic favor.

Populations grow more comfortable acting before they deliberate. Communities that rehearse the song treat setbacks as prompts to continue, and competitive tension circulates as shared entertainment. Play becomes the accepted register for confrontation.

Audience Vibe

The compass reads the lyrics. The Audience Vibe reads the people — the general place the audience thinks the compass should be pointing for this song, not a raw tally of votes. Two needles, one song; the gap between them is the data.

Do you think it should stay where it is, or be pushed further in one direction?

One vote per person per song per year. No single vote can move the needle far — it takes a crowd.

How the Audience Vibe is calculated

The needle is the compass score nudged by the crowd — never a raw tally. Every "push higher," "push lower," and "agree" vote is recombined into one position each time someone votes:

  • Direction comes from the split. Only the gap between higher and lower votes moves the needle. "Agree" votes pull it back toward the compass score.
  • It takes a crowd. Early votes move it gently — a handful shifts it only a point or two. The more lopsided the crowd, the further it goes.
  • It's capped. The audience can pull a song at most 15 points off the compass score, either direction. No pile-on can push it past that.

So a single "push lower" on a song with few votes moves the needle a little (often a point or two), not all the way down — and it can never run away.
