What Might This Song Do to the Listener?

Cherry Pie trains you to taste a lover before you ever see her. The woman arrives as a dessert, a flavor on your tongue and an appetite you brag about from the porch to the kitchen floor. Wanting her means eating her.

Your regard for a partner narrows to what her body does for your mouth. You stop clocking the people you crave as people and start sizing them as servings, something sweet to finish and show off. You reach for a person and come back with a plate.

What Might This Song Do to a Society?

A society that sings along with Cherry Pie learns to taste women before it looks at them. Sung in unison, a lover becomes a dessert passed around the room, an appetite a crowd brags about from the porch to the kitchen floor, and wanting someone starts to mean consuming her. Courtship turns into ordering off a menu.

People rate a partner by how sweet she tastes and how well she serves, so a woman's inner life stops being something anyone asks after. Talk about desire flattens into talk about flavor, and the men doing the tasting expect applause for it. A whole population reaches for each other and finds a plate.

Audience Vibe

The compass reads the lyrics. The Audience Vibe reads the people — the general place the audience thinks the compass should be pointing for this song, not a raw tally of votes. Two needles, one song; the gap between them is the data.

Do you think it should stay where it is, or be pushed further in one direction?

One vote per person per song per year. No single vote can move the needle far — it takes a crowd.

How the Audience Vibe is calculated

The needle is the compass score nudged by the crowd — never a raw tally. Every "push higher," "push lower," and "agree" vote is recombined into one position each time someone votes:

  • Direction comes from the split. Only the gap between higher and lower votes moves the needle. "Agree" votes pull it back toward the compass score.
  • It takes a crowd. Early votes move it gently — a handful shifts it only a point or two. The more lopsided the crowd, the further it goes.
  • It's capped. The audience can pull a song at most 15 points off the compass score, either direction. No pile-on can push it past that.

So a single "push lower" on a song with few votes moves the needle a little (often a point or two), not all the way down — and it can never run away.
