What Might This Song Do to the Listener?

An individual who plays Butter on repeat acquires a heightened confidence in personal charm as a sufficient social instrument. The material presents self-presentation as effortless and irresistible, and repetition transfers that posture onto the listener's own bearing. Self-regard rises.

Sustained exposure produces a lightening of mood alongside an appetite for display. The individual becomes more willing to occupy attention in social settings, and physical ease in company increases. Pleasure remains contained within the moment of performance.

What Might This Song Do to a Society?

A society that takes Butter into common circulation develops a shared preference for charm as the currency of public standing. Collective repetition of its dance instruction and its boasting establishes personal magnetism, ornament, and rhythm as the recognized means of drawing a crowd, and the invitation extends to anyone willing to move. Sociability becomes the civic default.

At the population level the pattern manifests as an increase in casual public gathering around music and display. Communities find a low-stakes occasion for assembly, and self-presentation acquires standing as an ordinary social skill. Public life gains an accessible ritual of collective movement.

Audience Vibe

The compass reads the lyrics. The Audience Vibe reads the people — the general place the audience thinks the compass should be pointing for this song, not a raw tally of votes. Two needles, one song; the gap between them is the data.

Do you think it should stay where it is, or be pushed further in one direction?

One vote per person per song per year. No single vote can move the needle far — it takes a crowd.

How the Audience Vibe is calculated

The needle is the compass score nudged by the crowd — never a raw tally. Every "push higher," "push lower," and "agree" vote is recombined into one position each time someone votes:

  • Direction comes from the split. Only the gap between higher and lower votes moves the needle. "Agree" votes pull it back toward the compass score.
  • It takes a crowd. Early votes move it gently — a handful shifts it only a point or two. The more lopsided the crowd, the further it goes.
  • It's capped. The audience can pull a song at most 15 points off the compass score, either direction. No pile-on can push it past that.

So a single "push lower" on a song with few votes moves the needle a little (often a point or two), not all the way down — and it can never run away.
