What Might This Song Do to the Listener?

An individual who plays ABCDEFU on repeat acquires a vocabulary for the total dismissal of a former partner. The grievance extends outward from the person to his family, his friends, his work, and his possessions, and the listener comes to treat an ex's surrounding world as fair target. Anger arrives pre-sorted.

Repetition supplies relief and a sense of restored standing after being spoken about badly. It also trains escalation, since the insult widens with each pass and lands on people who did nothing. The individual leaves conflicts with more casualties than participants.

What Might This Song Do to a Society?

A society that sings ABCDEFU together licenses collective contempt as the ordinary exit from a relationship. Communal repetition widens a private grievance to take in relatives, friends, and livelihoods, and mockery of a former partner's taste and possessions circulates as shared entertainment. Retaliation becomes the accepted farewell.

At the population level, separations produce collateral damage to uninvolved households, and the reputation of an ex becomes public property. Capacity for quiet parting declines. Conflict resolves through audience approval.

Audience Vibe

The compass reads the lyrics. The Audience Vibe reads the people — the general place the audience thinks the compass should be pointing for this song, not a raw tally of votes. Two needles, one song; the gap between them is the data.

One vote per person per song per year. No single vote can move the needle far — it takes a crowd.

How the Audience Vibe is calculated

The needle is the compass score nudged by the crowd — never a raw tally. Every "push higher," "push lower," and "agree" vote is recombined into one position each time someone votes:

  • Direction comes from the split. Only the gap between higher and lower votes moves the needle. "Agree" votes pull it back toward the compass score.
  • It takes a crowd. Early votes move it gently — a handful shifts it only a point or two. The more lopsided the crowd, the further it goes.
  • It's capped. The audience can pull a song at most 15 points off the compass score, either direction. No pile-on can push it past that.

So a single "push lower" on a song with few votes moves the needle a little (often a point or two), not all the way down — and it can never run away.
